Goals and Objectives

This 4.5-day workshop is designed to give engineers, testing personnel, and inspectors a basic understanding of the asphalt mix design process. Attendees will review material specifications, test procedures, and general mix design requirements for Superpave or Marshall volumetric mix designs, with hands-on training using standard procedures and criteria. The focus will primarily be on Superpave. This course includes NCAT certification or mix designer certification for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Program Content

The course features lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training using Superpave and Marshall methods. It is split between classroom lectures (2.5 days) and lab work (2 days). Topics include:

  • Aggregate properties and testing
  • Volumetric analysis and mix design
  • Moisture susceptibility and performance testing
  • Binder and aggregate lab tests
  • Mix design using Superpave gyratory compactor
  • Rutting resistance using APA and Hamburg Wheel Tracker

Exam and Certification
